How to Calculate Board Feet (with Real Lumber Examples)

Board feet confuse people because the number does not match any dimension you can see. Learn the one formula and a few real examples and it clicks for good.

If you have ever priced hardwood, you have met the board foot. Softwood framing is sold by the piece, but oak, walnut, maple and other hardwoods are sold by volume — and the board foot is that volume unit. Master it and you can compare boards of any size and estimate a project’s material cost before you leave home.

What a board foot is

A board foot is 144 cubic inches of wood. The classic picture is a board 12 inches wide, 12 inches long and 1 inch thick — but any piece with the same volume counts as one board foot, whether it is long and thin or short and fat. Because it measures volume rather than length, it lets a dealer price a 1 by 12 and a 2 by 6 on equal footing.

The formula

Board feet = thickness (in) × width (in) × length (ft) ÷ 12
or, if length is in inches: thickness × width × length ÷ 144

Both give the same answer; use whichever matches how you measured. Multiply by the number of identical boards, and add different sizes together for a project total. The board foot calculator lets you stack several sizes and adds them up.

Nominal vs. actual: the number-one gotcha

Softwood is sold by nominal size, and nominal is a lie of convenience. A "2 by 4" leaves the mill at 2 by 4 inches rough, then gets planed down to about 1.5 by 3.5 inches. So its true board-foot volume is smaller than the name implies. Rough-sawn hardwood, by contrast, is usually close to its stated size until you surface it. The rule: calculate with the dimensions you are actually being charged for. If the yard quotes nominal, use nominal; if it sells surfaced stock by actual size, measure the real thing.

The quarter system for hardwood thickness

Hardwood thickness is written in quarter-inches, which throws off newcomers. The number over four is the rough thickness in inches:

Thicker stock holds more wood, so it costs proportionally more per board foot. A tabletop milled from 8/4 walnut carries roughly double the material cost of the same footprint in 4/4.

From board feet to dollars
